Bellevoir means "Beautiful View" and was given the name by Hamilton Ormsby and his wife Edmonia Taylor Ormbsy (cousin of President Zachary Taylor). He had inherited the estate from his father Judge Stephen Ormbsby. The estate was famous throughout the 19th century for its dairy cattle and trotting horses and included its own railroad terminal, Ormsby Station.
Brick Victorian Italianate home. Built over 120 years ago after the Civil War by Ormsby. Numerous renovations have been done on it but it is constant repair. Peeled paint can still be found throughout but so can original doors as well as chimneys and staircases. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places it is a landmark in this city. Two staircases (one used to be used for servants and then there is the main staircase), fireplace in each major room, three porches and one balcony. First floor is 2940 sq ft and second floor is 2705 sq ft. It is now used intermittently as meeting rooms for the Metro government. The interesting thing about this home are the old style windows (which true to form) have those old window defects and can sometimes lend to people seeing things that aren't really there. At one time the house was also used as a juvenile correction facility. That was in 1912 when the Ormsby decendants sold it to Jefferson County.
So to follow are pictures of my 2 hour investigation of this property. Activity given on this house include footsteps on the staircase, slamming doors, images of children as well as black figures, people talking and laughing and cold spots and the feeling of being watched.
We started off on the first floor and did baseline readings. It was an overcast day with rain. Temperature was in the 60's. No wind. The only temperature fluctuations I got were on the second floor "Nanny's room" where there was a two degree down temperature difference than in the other room to the left (Gentlemen's quarters). After walking through and taking the readings we did some EVP work. Unfortunately every room in the place had smoke alarms with dead batteries and every minute or so you would hear a loud beep (alerting people to change the batteries). So that essentially made my EVP recordings impossible to listen to in any detail. But this was a part of my ghosthunting class and the teacher said it was an exercise in how to do EVP recordings rather than an actual investigation. Good thing because some people kept talking throughout.
Anyhoo, here are the pictures I took. I do not have a video recorder right now. But that is next on my list. I have my eye on a Sony which does extremely well in showing images even in low ambient light.

After the investigation and only the instructor and I are left in this house. The same with the pictures to follow.
Walking to the upstairs all by myself - spooky
Halfway up - getting braver
On the landing of the upstairs and everything is really dark and eerie
Back downstairs while I am waiting on the instructor to pack up and I help her close down and walk her out.
All in all I had a good time but it wasn't much of an investigation for a Ghosthunter rookie like myself. The instructor said she and her team have stayed overnight and had activity happen to them personally. I want to stay overnight there!
GHD
Beautiful place. Bet you can't wait to get back there without a class and an instructor!
1Dayum that house is HUUUUGE! You are a brave soul.
2Scary that you went upstairs on your own! You are brave to want to stay overnight.
3That's a beautiful house. You are very brave.
4What a beautiful house! I would love to live in a place like that. As long as the ghosts left me alone and all.
5That would be awesome to stay the night there!!
Love the pics, the house is gorgeous!
6That house is ginormous! You really are brave, I'd be spooked to be alone in there!
7That house is gorgeous!
I still think you should be teaching the class.

It's breast cancer awareness month!
8That house is beautiful, but gives me the spooks just looking at it!
9Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek
You went upstairs alone!?
That house is gigantic!!! Oo that's scary...
We watched this show on ghosts of Gettysburg last night that was really cool. This other show on ghostly.. experiences & encounters came on afterward but it scared the shiz out of me so we had to turn it off
10Yeah that was the show I was talking about a week or so ago, Karma. I made a post about it in here. I have it recorded on my DVR since we went camping last night.
11That place just looks haunted to me, girl! You are so brave, just being in there in the dark would have made me peep my pants!
12That house is amazing! You should come to Charleston & check out the crazy sh*t we have here!
13Hey- Imagine my surprise when I was telling my mother about the Bellevoir house and she googled it and got your blog post! I was in one of the ghost hunting classes that night. In fact, I'm the chica in your picture when the sensor went on "danger". This house was a great house to visit and you did a good job captioning it. Cheers!
14I know exactly who you are! You and I were talking when we walked outside towards the left side of the house as we were walking to the back. Too cool. You have been a member here for a year and we had no idea. Small world.
I was the Waverly Hills girl in the class.
15That is a gorgeous house! Next to the last picture looks like there can be an orb in the doorway. I wrote off a picture of me in the hospital when I had my daughter that had the same spot (I thought it might have been done during the developing) I'm curious now, that "orb" looks exactly like the one in my picture, what are the odds?
16Hello Ladies
I am not sure when this post was started but I can tell you from first hand knowledge that this house is NOT HAUNTED. I lived on the campus of Ormsby Village back in the 70's for 4 years. The house WAS NOT used as a juvenile correction facility, the property surrounding the house was used as a correction facility. My father was Assistant Director of the facility, David Riffe was Director. It was called Ormsby Village Treatment Center.
David Riffe and his family lived in the mansion for approx. 6 years. We lived in a 4 bedroom home around the corner from the mansion. I went back in 1995 and our house was now an office building, and the mansion had Asbestos Warning signs on the windows. They also installed an alarm.
I have spent numerous nights in the mansion with the Riffe family and don't remember any paranormal activity at all in the home. I really wish people who call themselves "ghost hunters" would get there facts straight, the home is not haunted. Sorry to burst your bubble. It is just an old house with some history attached to it.
I would stay there again anytime!
At any rate, I miss living there tremendously! We had soooo much fun watching the hot air balloons land in the corn field across from our house, Sunday Chicken Dinners from the staff. I had full run of the place with my friend Steven Riffe, I wish it was back the way it used to be. But with the Giant UPS Facility blocking the road, our home that is no longer there, and all the nice people gone, it just isn't the same. I live in Southern California now, I was a child then and I am 38 now, it was a long time ago, but will definitely be close to my heart forever.
Also The movie Stripes was filmed there.
Any questions let me know.
